Three dedicated students at Weiser High School, Hannah Walker, Nathan Burris and Emma Packer, are heading to the State Vocal Solo Competition on May 4-5, 2018. All three received a Superior rating at the District III Competition and placed first in their vocal category.
At the District level, students from smaller schools are judged against other students from smaller schools. However, at the State Competition, school size is irrelevant. Vocalist from Weiser compete against vocalists from all schools in Idaho. The State of Idaho provides a list of songs from which the students must choose their solo. They sing the song they have chosen at District and State.
It takes many years of practice to develop the vocal skills to compete at the state level. These three students have not only spent many years developing their singing skills but have also been involved in sports and many other extracurricular activities. If you have attended any event at Weiser High School, you have probably seen one or all of these students participating in some way or another.
Hannah Walker
Hannah Walker competed in the Soprano vocal category at the District Solo Competition and qualified for the State Solo Competition for the third year in a row. Last year she placed 5th at State overall.  She is an involved senior at Weiser High School.  Hannah was selected as the November Elks Student of the Month.  While maintaining a 4.0 GPA all throughout high school, she has been the vice president of her class for three years, vice president of the Leo Club, a member of Red Wave, FCA, Science Club, and Concert Mistress of the Weiser Youth Symphony.  Hannah has helped arrange songs for and sing in the Victoria Arriero-Thomas Performing Arts Studio “Black Lights” performing group.  She has been a member of the Weiser High School Chamber Singers for four years.  She has participated in Varsity and State Track all of her years at Weiser High School and competed at State in Cross Country this year.
Hannah’s many music lessons and countless hours of practice have helped her to become an accomplished classical vocalist, pianist, and violinist. Denice Jensen has been her vocal teacher for most of her high school years, and her mother, Sherilee Walker, has taught her violin and piano since a very young age. For fun, she plays the guitar and ukulele.  She especially loves to write, record, and produce her own songs.  She has even created her own website,, featuring the best of her works.  Her main goal and purpose as a singer/songwriter is to inspire others for good with her creations.  She loves to share her music to enlighten and lift all those who listen.
One of her favorite musical experiences has been helping her father write “The Galloway Musical,” an inspiring pioneer story about a local family who founded the city of Weiser, as a fundraiser through the Weiser Chamber of Commerce to raise money for the Snake River Heritage Center.  They donated the net proceeds to the museum.  Throughout the process, she wrote and co-wrote 12 original songs for the production.
Hannah plans on studying Commercial Music at Brigham Young University after she graduates to further pursue her love for music.  She hopes to continue helping other people in her life and inspire others through her music.
Nathan Burris
Nathan Burris is a senior and is this year's Weiser High School ASB president. He competed in the Baritone vocal category at District. Although Nathan has been singing for years, to prepare for scholarship competitions and District III solo contest, Nathan recently started taking voice lessons from Dr. Gretchen Longwell, a vocal music teacher at Ontario Middle and High Schools. He would like to thank Dr. Longwell for her coaching.
He has two favorite pastimes: music and sports. Nathan has played Wolverine football and golf all four years of high school as well as helping out with cheer stunting for part of his junior year.  In addition to his leadership in the WHS ASB, Nathan is a Huddle Leader for Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Nathan is always either making or listening to music. Nathan has been truly blessed by the WHS music department and our amazing teachers Mr. Fortin and Mr. Turner.  He spent two years in high school marching band, concert band and percussion ensemble and the past three years in Chamber Singers.  Nathan has been in four musicals over the years with leading roles the past two years in Once Upon a Mattress and The Headless Horseman.
Nathan is also part of the worship teams at Weiser Church of the Nazarene and at the Weiser community youth group. Nathan has competed for and won music scholarships at his top two choices of universities for next fall and plans to major in music and minor in business so that he can work toward his dream of working in and possibly someday owning his own recording studio and record label.
Emma Packer
Emma is a senior at Weiser High School. She is no stranger to the Idaho State Vocal Solo Competition after qualifying for the competition all four years of high school in the Mezzo-Soprano vocal category. Very few have been able to return to state all four years.
Emma has also been a member of the Weiser High School Chamber Singers for 3 years and has participated in four Weiser High School musicals in both chorus and lead roles.
She has studied her music with the VATS studio (Victoria Arriero-Thomas Performing Arts Studio) for over four years during which she has performed numerous times around the community and other surrounding communities.
Emma has performed in the Miss Outstanding Teen as well as other local and state pageants. She performed a full year in the community as Miss Three Rivers Outstanding Teen and is currently performing another year of service as Miss Three Rivers. During this time her music has played an important role in singing in front of the State Legislature as well as numerous sporting and community events.
Emma recently placed in the top 10 in the State Miss Idaho's Outstanding Teen pageant and will be representing our area again in the Miss Idaho pageant in June 2018.
If you see one of these students performing or serving around Weiser, wish them good luck at State!
