Lions Club Member, Betty Simpson received the 3rd highest award that can be bestowed on a Lion at the mid-winter convention, held in February this year. There have only been 3 of these awards given, Betty being the 3rd one to receive it. It is the Distinguished Leadership Award. Betty received a special Pin with a ribbon and a Lions Leadership in a case with a personally signed business card from International President, Gudrun Yngvadottir.

Betty Simpson has been part of the Lions Club for 13 years. Betty has lived in Weiser since 1975, graduating from Ontario High School and later on become a graduate from College of Idaho. Betty served as the Lions secretary for 5 years, going to Membership Vice President for 1 year. In 2014 Betty was Lions Club President for 2 years. Betty became District Zone Chair in 2015, as Zone Chair Betty works closely with 5 other clubs: Weiser, Payette, Syrnga, Fruitland and Ontario, Oregon. Her duty is to visit these clubs and keep them informed of the happenings in District. She also attends the District Board meetings. She has received many honors while being a Lion; she states “accepting this award and any others, I hope my fellow Lions consider it theirs as well, because I couldn’t do it without them.”

Some of the rewards Betty has received are: The Hallock Wehmann Reward from Weiser- twice, Lions Club District 39W Lion of the Year and much more. For Betty,  it isn’t about the number of rewards she has received but about the work that they do as a team. “I love our Lions and what they do for our communities. The motto is simple but meaningful ‘Where there is a need, there is a Lion’, I couldn’t have done it without my Lions.”

One of their biggest fundraisers is Home Concessions at the high school football games. The funds are used for other service projects in our community. As a Lion they are required to keep track and report all service projects, also they are always looking for new members to join. “We Serve” is another motto they live by and they want to encourage others to get involved.

This year is the 90th Anniversary of The Weiser Lions Club. Betty Simpson will also be running for 2nd Vice District Governor for 2020-2021. Great job to our Weiser Lions Club! And good luck to Betty Simpson in her new endeavors with the Lions Club!
