Washington County will host two public meetings this month to inform the public regarding the update to the Hazard Mitigation Plan. A meeting will be held at the Vendome Events Center in Weiser on May 22, at 5:30 p.m. The second meeting will take place in Cambridge at the Washington County Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall on May 23, also at 5:30 p.m.
These public meetings are designed to educate the people of Washington County about their Hazard Mitigation Plan, answer questions regarding the plan or the planning process, and receive feedback concerning natural hazards within the county. Later this year a public comment period will be announced, giving citizens and interested parties an opportunity to review a draft of the plan.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires counties to update this plan every five years to remain eligible for federal funding for hazard mitigation projects. The cities of Cambridge, Midvale, and Weiser are currently recognized jurisdictions in the plan and will adopt the 2019 plan update. The update process began in December and delivery of the final draft of the plan is anticipated for October.
This project is funded through a grant from FEMA and a planning team has been working with Washington County Emergency Management throughout the update process. The team consists of representatives from local agencies, organizations, governments, and groups. Northwest Management,Inc. has been retained by Washington County to provide risk assessments, hazard mapping, field inspections, interviews, and to collaborate with the planning team to update the plan.
