What Weiser has been experiencing for the last couple of years with the Evelyn Stover Recycle Center is a common scenario across the United States today. As much as we all want to recycle, it does not seem to be viable option at this time.
“Recycling, for decades an almost reflexive effort by American households and businesses to reduce waste and help the environment, is collapsing in many parts of the country.”
The Big Why?
The Recycle Center is unable to self sustain and it’s only getting worse.

Along with the fact that we are no longer receiving money for our recyclables; we must
have users sort, so that the Volunteers don’t have to waste their time sorting thru what
should already be sorted.

Sorting
“Recycling has been dysfunctional for a long time,” said Mitch Hedland, executive director of Recycle Across America, a nonprofit organization that pushes for more standardized labels on recycling bins to help people better sort material. “But not many people really noticed when China was our dumping ground.” Quotes from the New York Times 3/16/2019. Sorting is an issue @ The Evelyn Stover Recycle Center and it’s very frustrating.

Helpful Tips
NO STYROFOAM/NO PLASTIC- Remove from all boxes.
If it doesn’t fit in the Large Cardboard Sorting Containers it won’t fit into the crusher. Break apart really large boxes.
Small items (misc.: toilet paper rolls, pill boxes, paper towel rolls) in a box or paper sack so it doesn’t spill, the volunteers have trouble getting small items out of the Large Cardboard Sorting Containers.
TRASH CANS are for HOUSEHOLD TRASH ONLY no lawn clippings, pallets, dead animals ……etc.
NEWSPAPER, PHONE BOOKS & MAGAZINES all go in the same bin.

While we feel that the Marylyn Stover Recycling Center is a valuable asset to our community, in order to keep waste out of our landfill. We are coming to a crossroads where decisions must be made about whether to continue with the program. We hope that at some point in time it will become a more worthwhile endeavor.
